Day 2 - Learning about the Effects of the Atomic Bomb

The greatest history lesson can only be found in Nagasaki today as the Riverlites were guided by Mr Hirose, one of the survivors of the Atomic bombing in Nagasaki on August 9th 1945. Mr Hirose, along with Mrs Yoshida and Mrs Kai arrived at 8am and brought our Riverlites into the the day "Fat Man" fell on Nagasaki.

The Riverlites woke up in their room where they had a great night's rest sleeping on futons which they laid on the tatami. Here's a glimpse of the rooms (boys' of course).

Looking fresh and ready to go
One more shot before setting off
Everyone having a hearty traditional Japanese breakfast

You don't get to have this kind of breakfast everyday.........
Climbing up the slope to Urakami Cathedral, one of the structures that were destroyed by the Atomic Bomb.
Mr Yeo presenting the Cranes of Peace done by our Riverlites at the Nagasaki City Nagai Takeshi Memorial Museum. This museum is to remember the noble Dr Nagai who gave his life while saving victims of the Atomic Bomb. Dr Nagai's grandson, looked on as Mr Yeo hung up the cranes.

While visiting the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum, our Riverlites caught the attention of the NHK crew and they were filmed as they learnt more about the effects of the Atomic Bomb. The programme "原爆投下" will be aired on NHK on 27 August 2008 at 10p.m.

Lunch time and always the best time as the Riverlites get ready to dig in

Mr Hirose thanking the Riverlites for doing their part in promoting peace

The Riverlites were pleasantly surprised as they were given the opportunity to visit Downtown, Nagasaki where they managed a 45 minutes shopping break.

Just look at those happy faces.......
